brick, 2017 - present

brick is a conceptual work following the story of an old brick via diary entries collated into an archive of events. The subject of the project, the brick, was found in the River Exe, Devon, in October 2017. I carried it with me every day, everywhere for seven months. The events noted in the archival document tell the story of its transition from an old inanimate object to a sentimentally and eventually monetarily valuable part of my life.

After seventeen months of keeping the brick in my possession, I decided to sell it at an art auction. The piece now continues as an on-going project, as the brick passes hands from person to person, place to place - a documented continuation of its existence as an object. Information is fed back to me about the brick's whereabouts and events taken place along the way, compiled into the brick archive. The piece reflects transformation, the transience of things, and the human necessity to value and have companionship with something – even a brick.
